Xol is an independent bookstore and creative studio, owned by Dário Solari and Kristen Spilman. Our shop includes a curated selection of new, rare, and out-of-print books ranging from the visual and culinary arts to social consciousness and counterculture.
Both having lived well-traveled lives, with contrasting cultural influences, and diverse work experiences, Dário and Kristen have partnered to launch a space on the internet that fosters an inclusive perspective with a passion for people, print, the visual arts, and mindfulness.
Our creative practice, Studio Xol, works directly with anti-racist partners—creative directors, progressives, libraries, and collectors around the world—on various print / brand / creative projects. We offer consultation, creative direction, design, photography, and sourcing for project-specific creative material.
Dário spent his adolescence in and out of private British boarding schools living in Kenya, Burundi, South Africa and eventually the U.S. Skateboarding and the love of design brought him to Los Angeles where he studied architecture at Sci-Arc. He was born in Maputo, Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony heavily influenced by Indian and Arabic culture.
Kristen spent most of her career on the east coast as an Associate Partner at Pentagram, NY, and faculty member at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, MD, teaching graphic design, typography, and publication design. She is currently a Design Director at Airbnb, San Francisco. Prior to joining Airbnb, Kristen has also held leadership roles on the design teams at Dropbox, Facebook, and Stripe.
