In Japanese "Sonomama" translates  simply as "in a natural state" or "just as you are".

In this now beloved collector's "classic" published in 1987, photographer Taishi Hirokawa travelled around the Japanese countryside with a wagon full of high fashion clothing from labels such as Issey Miyaki, Commes De Garçon and Yohji Yamamoto seeking out regular folk and craftspeople living in harmony with nature and uninfluenced by the fashion world to wear the clothes in their natural state as he photographs them. The subjects included fishermen, farmers, grandmothers, gas station attendants, grocery store workers, an ice-cream man and an amateur archeologist among others.

The combination of genuine personalities (infectious imperfectly perfect smiles) and timeless fashion is pure bliss.
